Dude where did you get 7sq feet of hide and how much did you pay! I bought my half hide at mikes falconry and it was only like 3 sq feet and it was like $50....
Why does it have to be made from stainless? That is why the cost. I made mine out of cold roll 1018 (basically a smooth carbon steel). And painted it and covered with rope. Cost about $15 in material and about 1 hour to cut and weld. And another hour to paint and wrap.

No, i'm talking the cost of labor was 85 dollars an hour, plus regular steel... it would have been more expensive, so i figured, might as well get the stainless, and it's all stainless steel, powdercoated base, and wrapped in neoprene. So it's all the nicest stuff, from what every company i talked to, they told me to order online, that it would be cheaper in the long run (one person quoted it as 2 hours per perch placing it as 170 dollars + materials per perch, with shipping and everything from mikes it was 277 for a perch with a platform and a perch with spikes).
Snafu - I got my leather at westernsporting, like 90-ish for 7-8 sq ft.
**EDIT** sorry, i know this isn't really the place for this, but it sort of fits into my mews and prep area. it's the stuff in my prep area...
here are the pics of my glove and scale, the gloves are a bit washed in color in the pics, but it's like yellow and brown.
and here is the scale

see you all have connections, but hey, i'm not complaining, I needed the perches... And hey, so what if they were pricy, they would have cost more buying them from a welder with just labor alone, then i'd have to wrap them myself!
Atleast now my perches are stainless steel, and wrapped already! No messing with spray paint, no messing with rope, no messing with glue or neoprene. And with buying them, I know they will be heavy enough! ;D
morgan, just a thought, but one of the reasons I like our sport is the fact that every piece of its equipment except the scale can be made, and if you will look at my equipment that is what i try to do. Our sport is an accent one and the traditions are great and should still be practiced. I wish most sponsors required the apprentice to make most of their on stuff, I will when I sponsor some one. I am glad that you are able to borrow the money and buy the pricey stuff. I could too, as you can tell by looking at my mews. I just wish more apprentice would make more of their own stuff. Just my thoughts, not directed at you personally.

well i do make my own stuff... the only things i ever bought were a hood, the bow perches, the hunting vest, the bells, and the scale. Everything else i've made.
I would have made my own bow's but I don't have access to cheap materials, and my dad can only weld certain things, I can't sew at all nor do i have the equipment to make hoods.
I do honestly make everything i can, from the jesses, anklets, creance etc. Oh and the pricey stuff (i'm assuming you mean the perches), i bought with my own money. As I already explained though, the welding prices here are astronomical! If they don't gouge you in the labor, they gouge you with the materials. So I figured "might as well save money, and get the top of the line". I wasn't about to pay 200.00 (there abouts) per perch that isn't top of the line when i could pay 150.00 (including shipping) for a piece of top of the line equipment... call me crazy
oh well i forgot that, but i mean i did make a majority, there are just things i couldn't make, like the bow perches and the hood and stuff. oh and faconry is an ancient sport, but i don't recall people in 750 BC having steel or welders
yep, if u wanted to go the true traditional route... a lot of the stuff you'd have is wrong. As far as i know, the bow perch is a western invention (a.k.a everything west of england and some europe). And then in the carving of the perches, you aren't allowed lathes, maybe some flint chisels and a rock... maybe a rudimentary hammer. lol
