;DWell I finally got started on building my mews this weekend. I am copying Manny Carrasco's mews. Mine will be 20' x 20' total building. The left 10' x 20' will be a combo mew/weathering. The right side will be a closed in area for equipment/shop. I will have plants and stone walks and perches similar to Manny's. I will post pics as I get them, right now all I've done is the layout and the post holes for the poles. If you want to check out Manny's his site is squirrelhawking.homestead.com/home.html He has some good stuff on the site.

Good luck with that! You're birds are going to live like the queen of sheba in mews like that.
When through the woods and forest glades I wander And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze
Well I got a little more done. I know it don't look like much, but just want y'all to witness my project. The yellow tubes are for the concrete columns that the treated 4" x 4" x 10' poles. The columns will be 1' tall. Therefore the mews side will have a 11' ceiling. The shop side will be 9 1/2' ceiling. The city inspector has to look at it before I pour the concrete. So I will get more pics later after I set concrete and poles. Here are the pics I have so far.
Oh yea my conures are keeping and I on me to be sure I do it right ;D

Hello, Just registered on this list service. I like the photos of your mews start.
I have a question. I was browsing the "Free" listing of the Las Vegas newspaper's classified section this morning and found a photo lab darkroom door. One of those revolving doors that won't let light in. I thought it would make a great entry for a mews which I hope to someday build (I'm just studying to get ready for apprentice exam right now). Anyone seen a darkroom door used as entry for mews? I wne ta nd picked it up. Will such an entry meet regulations for mews?
Ive never heard of it before but it is a brilliant idea. As long as you can lock it i think it would work great. It allows you to get to the bird without fear of it escaping. Nicely done!
To lock it.. u can weld on a metal ring that juts out of each door.. and put a pad lock on that and another ring on the side of the mews.. so no matter wat door spins.. you can lock it easily
Thanks for replies Falco and Matt. I've been study this contraption for a little while now. Since its basically a cylinder within a cylinder, the trick will be how to make a lock where either the hasp or the ring (whichever ends up on the inner cylinder) won't have a chance to jam between the two. May have to use a pin arrangement inside and out. Hey, nice conures. I have an Amazon yellow head we brought back from Panama 20 years ago. I'm wondering what he'll think about a raptor when I get to that point.
Well I have done some more, so here is an up date. Just for referance that is a 6' latter in the middle of the building. Remember right side is work area, and left side is mews.

Okay I have done a lot since these pics, I will post new pics later. I was wondering, has anyone used pvc for the rods in the window for the mews. I have noticed most common is bamboo, but I noticed at Lowes today pvc is actually cheaper. Has any one used or no someone who has, and what are the pros and cons.

Do you mean putting a rebar rod thru the pvc and than attaching that to the wood window area. If so sounds good but defeats the purpose of being cheap. I priced pvc at $ 1.25 for 10'. Or I could just use electrical conduit for $2.30 for 10'.

I've heard PVC cracks if the temperature gets too low, thats the only bad thing i've heard about it. I also suppose if someone tried to break it the conduit might make it a little harder but with any mew short of Fort Knox if someone really wants to get in they can.
