I just received my apprentice license in early January in Florida. When I had my mews inspected in December, I was told that it only needed to be big enough that the bird would not touch it's wings fully extended on the sides in flight. I gathered that at least an 8'X8' square (allowing 4' wing length x 2 for a big female rt) is definitely enough. My mew is 8 ft by 12ft and 8 ft tall and was approved.
This is something i have been meaning to ask about, is the hood really required upon inspection? It seems kind of akward to go buy a hood that may not even fit.
No hood is required. The required equipment is listed in the links.

That depends on the state permit coordinator you're working with. When I moved from TX to AZ I had to write a letter to explain my situation and why I would benefit from keeping my sponsor in Texas for them to agree to not make me get a new AZ sponsor. I also had my sponsor send them a letter stating that he was willing to continue being my sponsor from out of state.
Another Question. In Fl do you have to have a sponser before you take the test?
Nope, just study up and then give your regional FWS office a call to schedule your exam.

Anyone in florida wanting to make the Sept/Oct trapping window had better get their stuff together ASAP as our state is absurdly slow at processing applications. Just thought I would throw that out there...
