I am getting back into trapping Raccoons and Muskrats this year and was wondering if anyone feeds Raccoon meat to their birds. They eat roadkill in the wild, so why would f a trapped Raccoon work? I know I would need to trim a lot of the fat off. I would like to hear from other peoples experience.
Yes if properly and cleanly butchered/ handled it would be an acceptable meat source. They still need small animal bones, fur and organs to have a complete diet. If it were me I’d add Vitahawk or Provital Raptor boost to it while feeding to cover the missing supplementation.
If you use a LEAD .22 or .17 to finish them on the trap, then the answer is no. Never feed your hawk from the carcass of an animal killed with lead bullets. A few single grains will kill a bald eagle if Eaten. Please only use LEAD FREE rounds when hunting anything from rabbits to Moose. The alternative kills more Birds than most hunters realize. I use copper XLT for Big game, tungsten for Turkey, and steel shot for everything else.
Those musk rats would be perfect freezer storage for your hawk. *** excluding lead kills***.
