I just made a couple automatic door closers for my mew doors. Here's what I did:
The concept of this gizmo is to use the weight on a cord and pulley to pull a door closed by gravity.
Gather together
* A length of parachute cord or rope
* A plastic bottle (soda, water) with cap full of pebbles of some other heavy stuff.
* a small pulley
* Two screw eyes
Put a screw eye in the near the top of the door. It should near the top on the side of the door that you want to pull toward you. Put it anywhere from over the knob to the middle of the door NOT THE HINGE SIDE.
Connect the pulley to the eye of the other screw eye.
The placement of this screw eye depends on your set up.
One option: If its a room, put the screw eye in the knob-side wall at or below the height of the other screw eye.
Another option: If, like me, you have a small safety chamber with and an exterior and interior door, attache the screw eye and pulley to the wall directly opposite the other screw eye. Place this screw eye near the corner.
Remove the cap from the bottle. Drill a small hole in the bottles cap just large enough to thread the cord through. Thread the cord through the cap from the outside to the inside and knot it so it won't slip back through.
Add pebbles, shot, or some other heavy stuff to the bottle and screw the cap back on the bottle. You should have a weighted bottle with a long dangling cord.
Take the cord and thread it though the pulley and then through the screw eye on the door you wish to pull closed. Pull the cord until the bottle is a
few feet off the floor and tie it off at this screw eye.
Test it out. open the door and see if the weighted bottle will close it. Make adjustments where needed.
