Which birds will apprentices be allowed to use when their state is under the new regulations? Also, to my understanding, apprentices may, under the new regulations, purchase a captive bred bird. Am I correct?

The states will inevitably have that decision once they become compliant. They have the option of adopting the federal regs in full , as written , or amending it to a point. basically , the new blanket regulation is that an apprentice falconer may take American Kestrel or Red tailed Hawk . Some states allow an apprentice to have Passage Red shoulder and Harris' Hawks . The new Federal regulation for apprenticeship does state that an apprentice may use a chamber raised bird , however you may find it difficult to find a sponsor who would let you do it for your first bird.

i belive in Texas it states in our new reg. an apprentice can aquire a captive bred raptor but i will not count as a hawk to upgrade to general. you have to trap a wild hawk for it to count to upgrade to the next level. and i don't know many sponsors who would want a lifetime apprentice.
