As some will know I have been desperate to get my MRT on squirrels to start off with and have kept him in those areas. But yesterday I could see a problem. I would first like to point out he was not low in weight before I start.
He started 3 days ago to bate at me in the aviary for the first time. Clinging onto the wire but once I entered the mews he was calm and jumped on my fist to be weighed. I have sometimes then fed him off the fist and other times put the food through the chute into the aviary.
Then I placed him back in the aviary and he jumped on my head and guess what I cut my hair (what’s left of it) the night before LOL, there was no squeeze and no harm done. I placed him back on the perch and then before I left he jumped onto my arm and not my fist, he was obviously wanted the fist but I guess he saw my arm as a branch and this time sinking those claws into it. Well, I don’t care about that as you have to except it now and again.
yesterday, he started again bating at the wire at me but this time I put the food down the chute but on the way round I picked up some grass cutters and he baited at the wire again.
I would just like to remind you he was NOT low.
This morning I took him out, he was quite and never bated as I walked to my squizzer country. I hoisted him into a tree. He then followed on a few times it was looking good but no sign of a squizzer and then he headed for me and landed on my head. Now then at this point I put a chick leg on my fist and he jumped onto it. From now on he was getting nothing he then started following on again then he turned and I saw him coming I got out of the way. I positioned myself now under branches and he landed on them. I was not going to give in, and then he jumped onto my arm, well dopey me got hot 10 minutes earlier and just had a T shirt on. He clamped his feet right into my arm looking at me, I looked back relaxed and said ‘It don’t hurt pal’ as blood was dripping off my arm, I offered a branch and he jumped onto it. I decided to call it a day.
Now at this point I had been trying to get him at squizzer so perhaps, well no I am sure it’s my fault, but I had a RT and after his first Rabbit did not even look at a squirrel and never did sadly.
Imprinted, well yes and my answer could be to drag a squirrel, well I tried that but some birds will go for it but others won’t they know by movement it’s not live and a cold tasteless squizzer or rabbit.
I guess my only solution is to give in and go for a rabbit but I fear it could be too late for any quarry apart from a falconers arm and head.
so it’s back to the drawing board.
I would just like to add this. Many on here will only mention the good bits they have done and never put their mistakes on here in which EVERYBODY has from Master to general to pre-apprentice, They ‘Talk the Talk’ but don’t ‘Walk the walk’ how could they possibly be seen as making wrong decisions on here.....GOD FORBID their reputation would be in tatters but I wish more would no matter what status because it helps yourself and others. I am not necessary saying this IS a mistake but it may be pig-headed. I like people who admit they do because it has proved that they have got out there and not just dictated and never have done....
I have more respect for those that do and would learn more from them than those who never say they do.
I know what some are thinking, he is just telling us to justify his screw up.....But then why mention the whole thing anyway......
GOD....I hate being defeated.
