.... my sponsor hasnt flown an apprentice bird in 40 years. he flies all sorts of birds, coops, hh, peregrines, but he hasnt flown a RT, RS, or kessie in 40 years. sao am i at a disadvantage?
Do you really think flying RTs has changed much in 40 years? You're at a "disadvantage" by having a veteran falconer as your sponsor? You're just kidding, right?
ok i will explain.
40 years ago 75% of the forum probably wasnt alive, so the population was way less.
my sponsor tells me stories of hawking bunnies in a field that is now some of the most expensive realestate in the city. so with that RT he was able hunt rabbits and rats and other game in thoes fields.
this year my sponsor is thinking kessie or merlin due to the fact south texas has been in a 2 year drought, bunnies and other big rt game is now gold, unless i want to travel 3 hours one way to mediocre rabbit fields that other falconers will only hawk a couple times a week cause they have only a few more than we do.
so since i am going to fly a RT, and bunnies have been scarce, i talked to my sponser about squirrel hawking. he encouraged it even tho he has NEVER done it, he never needed to.
so a vetern falconer he is, and in 40 years yes falconry has changed, maybe not the way it happens but where it happens. human progress doesnt care about animal habitat so they are doomed, and a falconers are left in the cold.
so i didnt mean it the way it was read. i wouldnt trade my sponsor for the world, so please dont look to deep into that statement.
