hey guys any advice on mews? what should the mew size be? what materials do u think is the best? since i live in maryland and it can get fairly cold here any advice about winter?
What kind of bird will you have? How much money do you have to spend on it? For an RT 8x8 6-8 ft high is good. Your state regs may dictate minumums. Make your doors a minimum of 32 inches wide. 36 inches is better. Make sure you have a vestibule or safety door. A feeding chute is nice. Put it on a wall with no windows so the bird can't see you coming. South facing windows. Mine are 3'x4' and that's plenty large. I have a 1'x1' window facing east. Solid walls to the north. Pea gravel floors are my choice but you'll get lots of opinions on that. Just don't do straw or saw dust. I have sky lights but i wouldn't do that again. My birds have hit them to many times and they don't add that much light. Materials: Avoid treated lumber, other than that, go with what you can afford.
Come to Missouri and I'll show you mine. Change everything i did wrong and you'll have the perfect mews.
If you free loft your bird. You use the food chute to feed it during the molt or just for any feeding when you don't hunt him. The chute gets the hawk use to expecting food from the chute instead of you as you enter the mews. It is there to prevent the hawk from charging you as you enter the mews when it's a hunting weight.

Does anyone have any advice on a mew for a kestrel? I have built an awesome mew for a RT but i am board and needing something to do, so i need ideas on a kestrel mew. I don't want to build another 8X8X8, i am looking for a smaller design if possible, but still able to pass inspections. any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
