Anyone ever tried Rope? like on bowperches etc? not astroturf? would it work the same? i thnk youd want astrotuf though for a free lofted bird... it probably "gives" more when they land, less of a shock when they hit it...
I had sisal rope in my mew and changed it all to astroturf because the bird seemed to like the turf better. I know a few people that use the rope with good sucess.

Don't use cotton rope, it frays and is a great way for the talons to get caught and break a toe. I use 3/8 to 1/2 hemp rope for all my perches, in the mew and on bow/ring perches. The ONLY time I use astroturf is on block perches for falcons and it is the short, soft stuff that looks like fake grass that people glue to their porches. I don't use the long, stiff astroturf because it looks uncomfortable to me and it is really stiff and pokey!
id also think, if the bird was flying to the perch, and it had that stiff stuff, they could have a BETTER chance of getting cut on it, or poked enough to make a prick... and then infection.. then bumble foot...

i had my kestrel on that thin stuff, and he started to get a smidge of bumble so i switched it to the long leaf and didnt have anymore issues. I havnt used it other than that though.

Ethics make the individual, not the other way around.
I use the plastic Daisy Mat astroturf on my outside zip-line perches and have never had a problem. On my portable perches, thought, I use sissal hemp, 1/2 inch. -Joe
I've always used long leaf astro turf. Never had any bumble problems ever. I also vary the diameter and have at least perches per bird. Another surface i have used is cheap leather scraps from stores. Costs like 3 bucks to cover a perch. I first put piping insulation then wrap it with the leather that is cut into long half inch strips.
