I believe he is building several pens of that size. Each one will hold about 100 quail. My pen is just under 3" wide and 12 feet long. The height is 14 inches high and in all honesty needs to be only 8 inches high. I have 80 jumbo sized quail in it now and it could easily house another 20. These birds need very little space when housed in pens and will breed quicker than any rat, mouse, or rabbit. Well worth the small investment to keep your raptor fed throughout the entire year at very little cost. Nothing else can touch it unless your bird is catching enough game during the hunting season to feed on for several months.

Cannibalism One of the major problems of rearing quail in confinement is cannibalism. Quail will pull the feathers or peck the nose, toes, tails and backs of their pen mates. Considerable mortality can result from this behavior, as well as decreased growth and an increased number of cull birds. Never underestimate the seriousness of the potential problem or the importance of preventing or stopping cannibalism. It is usually much easier to prevent cannibalism than it is to control it once it starts.
Any stress can trigger cannibalism. One of the most common causes of cannibalism is overcrowding, which usually includes a lack of feeder or waterer space. Never crowd the birds, and always provide more than adequate, easily accessible feeder and waterer space. Do not feed dusty, powdery feed, which readily collects on the birds' toes. Watch for beak and toe picking. Chicks brooded on wire floors are more susceptible to toe picking. Another common cause of cannibalism is an uncomfortable temperature in the birds' environment. Even though picking is usually worse in summer than in winter, being either too hot or too cold can trigger cannibalism.
Believe it or not, I looked this up and found the information I posted. Those are the words from the professionals. If you search cannibalism with raised quail, you will find an abundance of information.
Brent is correct. Perhaps your uncle had adequate facilities, therefore did not ezperience these problems...so you should have a good teacher than.
