I've finally begun my Mew, because I plan on moving soon I had to come up w/ something portable. I am in the process of converting a 8 x 20 construction trailer. It has 2x4 walls, plywood roof and floor, it will be split into two 10 ft rooms one for the mew and one for equip. etc. I've had a few suggestions on how to make the floor drain properly. I'm leaning toward using a roll-on truck bed liner coating but am concerned if this material will cause a health risk for my bird. Has anyone heard of this being used or another substitute. My main concern is to keep the floor from growing any mold/fungus whatever and keep the floor joists from rotting. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Are you planning on freelofting your bird or keeping it tethered? You might consider putting some astroturf down on the floor to keep the bird from dulling its talons. I have dirt in my mews right now and will add a layer of gravel as soon as I get my water lines run.
Hopefully the bird I wind up with will not be psychotic and be able to be free lofted. As far as the astroturf goes do you know anyone who has applied it to plywood. I'm probably worried over nothing, but the glue used to do this just scares me.
I've been thinking about doing that and possibly installing a shower pan to drain the water from the bath. I am concerned w/ the bird being able to pick at the carpet fibers if its not glued down.
If the bird wants to pick at it, it will, glued or not. I have turf on my perches and havn't noticed the bird picking at it. I also have carpet over gravel on the floor. He will occasionally roll a corner or edge with his talons or beak, but he doesn't break fibers, and I straighten it out when I go in.
