In your mews, MUST you have electricity, lighting(exept during moulting)heating and air conditioning?
Im just wondering, since Red Tails live here in Missouri all year around, and they can withstand the temps and weather easily.\
Thanks for your help

And also, if a red tail moults in the wild with out lights, must you have lights for moulting lights?

You do not have to have any of those. You just have to have housing {mews} big enough for the bird you have with an area that allows for weathering your bird. The weathering area does not have to be enclosd, but, if it is not enclosed, you have to really watch your bird because other birds can come in on it. Some times I weather my eagle out on my front lawn even though I have a big enclosed {avairy} weathering area.
If the bird lives there naturally, it should be able to withstand any natural weather, short of tornado/hurricane/eatchquake/ etc. If any of those hit, you have a bit more to worry about then heating or AC, anyway. I think some people who keep nonnative birds use them, but you would have to ask one of them for more.
As for electricty...it's a good idea to have it, if just for your own use.

Give a man a fire and he'll be warm for a day. Light a man on fire and he'll be warm for a lifetime.
In Missouri you must have ether a enclosed weathering or mews but you do not have to have both. I use a battery powered camper light in the mews. AC is unnessesary for an RT if you have decent ventilation, a large enough bath and fresh water every day will be fine. RTs can take the cold, just watch the weight to make sure they don't get too low. Kurt
K, my ultimate mew will be three enclosure that can double for breeding chambers. They will have heat lamps, an attached ac unit, running water and electricity. Now the only reason i would add all of that is for my ease of use. Right now my mew is just that, a mew. all my birds have done well in it. They live there naturally so they actually enjoy the protection offered from my mews from bad weather. Another thing to mention would be, if your not planning on living there your whole life like my dad and i, we built it so it could easily be turned into a shed before we moved. One more thing is we only induce the moult with merlins because of their strong desire to migrate. We get them out of the field so we dont lose them, then they are ready for youngens in the late summer! Hope this helped ya'll out.
thanks you all, for all the help. I live in the Country close to Cape in Missouri, and we have lots of room for a bird. This info really helped. But int the regs, I thought it said you must have a weathering area and a mews, not just a mews. So its ok to just have a perch(bow, T, or block) and your bird teathered to it for a weathering area? thanks again

For a RT, go with a bow or ring perch. The weathering area or mew or both thing depends on your state. Here, i am only require to have a mew, which im my case doubles as a weathering area b/c the entire front wall is vertical bars.

Ethics make the individual, not the other way around.
A weathering in Missouri must. Have space to allow tethered raptor to bate without striking wings on sides or top of facility. Sides of facility must be fenced with suitable material to exclude predators. Top of facility must be covered with netting, wire or roofed to exclude predators or perches must be higher than 6 1/2 ft in height. This is from the inspection form the agent filled out. Kurt

I wouldnt say that its a " Must" but it sure would be nice. My Mew doesnt have any of those things but I sure wish I would of thought of putting a sink outside ( possibly with warm water ) to wash off all that blood and guts i have to deal with everyday.
Electricity would be sweet.. but I just use a Flashlight.
thanks for the compliment, wolf, and thanks for all the help you guys. Right now all I have to do is wait for my information packet to come in.. I wish seconds went faster. I already have plans for my mews and weathering area. Oh,another question: Does anyone have any good sites that have directions on making your own falconry supplies? thanks for all ur help again, guys!
