I found the section in ya'll regs and they say nothing about round bars at all?
Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines "Give a man a fish, and you'll feed him for a day; give him a religion................ and he'll starve to death while praying for a fish."
"Rod" would indicate round bars....not sure about "bars" Either way, I would only use round bars regardless of what the regs say. I used 1/2"emt spaced 2 1/4 inches center to center. PVC is OK as long as your sure that there is no chance that someone will attempt to get into the mew. If you want real security, Use EMT, fill eash bar with runny concrete, then insert 3/8' rebar into the EMT They will have to use a saw to get through those ;D

Okay I would have asked this question in the flooring thread (where it belongs) but I can't reply to it, no reply or quote buttons... anyway, here's the question.
What is wrong with using a dirt floor exactly? I mean, everyone seems to want to be using gravel or carpet or astroturf. Dirt wouldn't be that hard to clean, just dig, flip, stomp down and the mews are clean. On top of that, you're fertilizing soil! So could someone please tell me what's wrong with a dirt floor in the mew?

The regs say it has to drain. Dirt does not drain. Do not take this the wrong way Sky. It is my observation that doing what others have done before you is not your style. You have asked about diet variations mew variations as well as others. I understand being different and trying to improve on existing ideas trust me on that. Falconry though is one of those things that if it is not broken then don't fix it. Ultimately you will do what your sponsor says. Being inquistive is beneficial. The techniques and traditions have been passed down for a reason....because they work. Now is the time for you to focus on those. When you complete your apprenticeship then you can go forth and try all your ideas. Just don't do it at the birds expense. JMO Yarak
If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away
Which is why I asked for people's opinion's first. Thank you for the corrections, I know the questions must get annoying but I don't want to screw up my first bird.

My Mems are.....
Weighing room: 10X10
Weathering Area: 20X20 (covered)
Mews Section: 10X10
And the great thing is its an old barn that my dad built and quit using so all it needs are a few adjustment and for a minute price I've got a complete mews

Laughina at ones self is essential. Laughing at others is stupid.
I would worry about having steel bars in mew if my bird suddenly broke free of his tether. At least the PVC pipes will absorb the impact.
For securitey I just lock the door... By the time they get my pipes out of the way they'll get a face full of talons, Dog's and shotguns up there $$%@!
