Since my hawking season ended today I am going to start helping out the rabbits. I do this by improving the habitat in my hawking areas. I start off by making brushpiles this gives the rabbits a place to breed and hide from predators. I make most of my brushpiles by cutting down small pine trees and laying them on top of pallets and 4 inch pipe they love to get in those pipes because most predators cant.. I also am going to put out some salt and mineral blocks I heard that it helps with breeding, it cant hurt. I also cut trails in my fields which allows the clover and grass to come up and create places for them to graze. I am going to live trap the feral cats in my areas they are very hard on baby bunnys in the spring. It is illigal to shoot them here so I will have to trap them and take them to animal control and let them do it which doesnt make much sense to me. I think cats running loose should be considered a nuisance species and should be killed year round they are very hard on wildlife. We have alot of feral cat colonies in my area people come to these areas and feed the cats and put boxes for them to get in because they feel sorry for them all this does is make the problem bigger. I really dont like cats running loose if you have them in the house good but dont let them run free and as Bob Barker says please spay and neauter your pets .
I went out to my best rabbit field and built 9 brush piles using some pallets and a big pile of old christmas trees that someone had dumped a few years back. Hopefully it'll help. Now I just need to do that in some of the other fields that I have. -Joe
I went out yesterday and recut some trails in my fields I do this because it allows clover to grow up instead of all honeysuckle plus it is easier to walk threw. I also put some new mineral blocks out there for the rabbits they love those. I am seeing lots of baby rabbits here lately there was 4 in my parents yard which is next to my place and around my property I see them every day one was sitting next to my harris hawk Freddy's chamber he was giving it the evil eye. Hopefully there numbers will be better then last year I have taken out alot of predators that were roaming around so I hope that helps.
Saw 10 rabbits today where I hunt every thing from tiny babies to full grown rabbits, I hope this will be a good year, they have really been out eating the clover that grows in the trails I have cut for them.
I am seeing alot of rabbits this year! My fields are full of them, I saw over a dozen rabbits today on my 20 acres and that was just by walking my trails at the edge of dark. I cant wait untill Oct when I can hunt my harris again, I also just picked up a new field today I can hawk it has loads of quail in it. ;D
