I may be out of line but if you know someone who's Gos got WNV TWICE..... Do you guys have THAT many mosquitos? Perhaps this guy should re-evaluate his husbandry. Invest in some mosquito nettings... SOMETHING.
I know people, including me, who are or have put mosquito netting on thier mews and I haven't heard of WNV in my area yet.

The problem with mosquito netting is that it retains heatand here in Tx it gets very hot. Mosquitos are a big problem here. I think the guy had two different birds not one that had it twice.I gave my bird the eqine vaccine before she contracted it. I had never had a single health issue till then it almost killed her. WNV is nasty stuff but as I said here it is too hot for netting. Yarak
If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away
Ya, and i know accips are even more succeptable to it than buteos....
Just sounded kind of odd.
Citronella candel? Something similar? I mean if mosquito netting is TOTALLY out of the question, there has got to be a way to keep em away from the bird.

My vet says he thinks she now carries enough titers to be resistant. Plus they are not as prevalent this year. Yarak

[glow=purple,2,300]For the netting why do you use wooven mesh? like the stuff o trampolines. the material gets warm but keeps it cool on the inside. yarak, how much of the equine preventive did you give to your bird? They typically start at abbout 200 pounds. Hehehe don't tell me you gave your bird the whole thing. [/glow]
Never settle.

I believe that once a bird has the virus and gets better there is a possibility that they could get it again with out being bitten by another mosquito carrying the virus, just from the resident virus inside the bird.
I am not sure if this happened or not in this particular case, but it is a possibility especially in a bird with a low immune system.

Dr. Pat Redig believes that it is similar to chicken pox in that it is very unlikely to reaccur twice in the same bird. He says also that at this point it is just a guess. Their is also the possibility that she is a carrier. We do not have enough info yet for any definate conclusions. I e-mailed him extensively while my bird was sick. Yarak

I know the falconers in the part of NC i used to live in used CO2 traps for mosquitos. Never had a case of WNV the whole time i lived there... and Eastern NC is all swamps so you guys that have mosquito problems, you could always try a CO2 or propane trap... just an idea...
Ive also noticed that moth balls help prevent misquitos as well as other bugs near the mews. Just make sure your bird cant get to them. I just put them out side of the mews.
