Any one have any ways of getting that glove smell out of the glove? I end up washing my hand for hours after having my glove on and still can't get the smell off my hands.
Depends on what the glove is made of. If it is a cowhide welder, I recommend tossing it. If elkskin, you might be able to wash it. Get a bucket of warm water, (if it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for the leather). Woolite or any gentle soap will work. Put the glove on and scrub with a stiff brush and soapy solution. Rinse and rinse and rinse. Let dry in a shady spot protected from dogs, etc. When almost dry, put it on and re-fit it to your hand. Finish with a good quality leather conditioner. Remember not to use anything that might cause your bird problems eating from it.
If that doesn't get rid of the funky, rotten meat smell, toss it. Don't expect your bird to eat from a funky glove. Hope this helps.
I have a goat skin glove and It had the funk going on at the end of last season...I washed it several times with regular dish washing soap and then re-oiled it with jess grease. Good as new.......until now, I need to wash it again......People have started asking me "what's dead?" when I walk past them......
Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines "Give a man a fish, and you'll feed him for a day; give him a religion................ and he'll starve to death while praying for a fish."
Jay, if you want to get that smell off your hands, while washing them, use a little bit of Lemon Juice (y'know, that really sour lemon stuff mom's use in baking) Used some just last night to get the smell of antelope blood off my hands. You might smell like lemons for a little bit but it's alot better than blood or in your case, that glove smell.
The outside of the glove is fine. Just the inside reaks from a sweaty hand in there all season pluss a little blood.
More or less started this thread as so somthing most guys could relate to. Not once have I found a falconry glove that is pleasant to stick my hand into.
