Ok, my sponser and I went out today with his cast of Harris hens. Now these birds are good squirrel hawks and have been doing it for years. I'll put it this way we had about an 2hours till dark and in 40min had 4 squirrels in the bag. Did they need help? No, almost every squirrel was dead by the time we got there. Two Eastren Grey squirrels female and buck for each bird. So...do I belive that the Harris can be a proven squirrel hawk? YES I DO NOW!-Zach Oh and one of the hens has lost a killer talon due to cancer when she was younger.
I used to think i knew some things. But i'm not so sure anymore.
Ok, Ruger is now 2-0 with another (huge) female Grey squirrel. Had squirrel in about twenty mins of being out in the lot. Would of had it sooner but the squirrel bailed almost on the sponser and when Ruger went into his dive he had to try and miss the sponser aswell. Squirrel ran back up dead tree all the way to the top. Ruger re-positioned himself and the squirrel made a mistake by trying to jump to the next tree. Ruger caught her in mid jump and came straight down. I rushed in to secure head which she already had a hold on his upper tarsus(near the feathers). Don't worry, bite wasen't bad treated with Iodine and a little Bactoderm. Good thing is it should heal a little faster. Well, I got pictures of this one so they should be up soon.-Zach

Ruger is 3-2 now! Big mean buck Grey, only bad thing he recieved a good bite to the bottom little outside toe. Cleaned it out real good and keeping an eye on it, should be ok and he'll be out hunting again once his weight is back down.-Zach

Well, Finally got Ruger down enough in weight to take him out yesterday. Ruger did pretty good for this being his first free flight/hunting trip of the year. Course he isn't as strong as he was (but that will come with time) last year. He caught two squirels one Juv (body not much bigger than my hand) and one adult . The adult was really giving him a hard time running up and down a tall Popular. I was in Georgia so the trees are still green and thick. He was at this squirrel for about 30min got a real good work out. He put in some awsome hard stoops giving the disadvantage. Scott (a friend of mine /falconer) is really handy with the sligshot. kept the squirrel moving in the thick tree. Well, that was untill the squirrel got a accidental hit in the neck with a marble. Well, will just say Ruger got a assist on that one. Squirrel fell out of the tree and Ruger was on top of him before he had time to collect himself. All in All it wasen't a bad day for a first hunt/free flight.-Zach

Went out with two local squirrel hawkers yesterday to get my fix until my bird is up and flying. We caught two fox squirrels and a ribbon snake.
Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines "Give a man a fish, and you'll feed him for a day; give him a religion................ and he'll starve to death while praying for a fish."
Weasel, least it was a ribbon snake most of the guys in Georgia are catching copperheads. I'm lucky so far that I haven't caught any snakes yet this year. We don't have copperheads in my area but lots of pygmy rattle snakes,Eastrens Diamonds and loads of Cottonmouths. I went out today for a about 30mins but the RSH's ruined my fun.

Yup, we get our fair share of those copperheads. I have caught two of them with RT"s
