Well ive been on vacation for the past week. I have been hunting every day but one day, come on I had to go to the Dentist and it fell on a windy day. out of 7 hunts i have 5 kills.
Today i think was special cause it was the first day i hunted with my mini dachshund Hunter. I have made sure that i walk around the yard with my bird on the fist and the dog running around. I have also over the past week or so introduced the dog and bird in the living room with the bird on his perch. they do well.
well we got to hunting. the dog spent most of his time following me around but after i flushed 2 bunnies the dog started to get a little proactive. we chased a rabbit out of under a snow plow which the bird missed. after that the bird took a real high perch on a freakishly high power pole. seriously it was almost 30 feet! i scared a rabbit and it immediatly went under some lumber. the bird flinched but acted as though he knew that he couldnt have gotten it so he stayed put and ready to launch. this is the cool part. i just stood there working in my mind on what i was going to do to get this rabbit out and while i was doing that and almost not paying attention my dog started following his nose. i watched him go to the lumber and go into the same hole the rabbit went into. suddenly i heard a bark and the rabbit running out the other side followed by my dog and very shortly by the bird. the bird dove down and the rabbit turned on the burners dusting my little dog but the bird just leveled out at 2 feet off the ground for a good 15 yard B-LINE to the rabbits butt as it was entering a bush. I herd the screaming of the rabbit and ran to catch up to the bird and dog. when i got there the dog was walking in circles around the bird. the bird didnt seem to care. i helped pull the rabbit more out of the bush so that the bird could get his head shot and finished with the neck breakage. after that i let the bird nip at the rabbit for a sec while i praised the dog for all his hard work. he liked that. traded off as usual with a precleaned portion of bunny and carried the bird to the truck so that the bird could finish his meal in the GH.
What a deal! first hunt with the dog and got a kill. in time i know that the dog will get better with his tracking and the bird will start really paying attention to the dog. THIS SHOULD BE A GREAT TEAM!
