My hawks also have traveled long distances leashed in a giant hood, no problems. Sounds to me like your hawk might be able to see too well in his GH. How much light is let into that box? If he is a jumpy bird you may just need to darken it up a bit.
Austin, I've traveled many miles with a giant hood and hawk leashed inside. No problem. The rehab group I volunteered for had 14 non releasable raptors that they used for education. Those birds also traveled by giant hood and they too were leashed. Yarak
I was just wondering because I'm planning on going some distance with this ferruginous to hunt jacks. She rides fairly well for now and I have not had any problems with her tangling yet. When I'm sitting still she likes to bounce around in there. If I put something over the hood then she hits the door a lot, so that won't work. I guess I could take the trip and start checking at intervals to she if she calm.
Plan your trips so she's travelling fully above hunt weight. She should be more complacent if not expecting a hunt. Essentially change the routine of her in the GH to not expect it always means hunting. Place her in it at home for a few hrs. At night , after feeding...
My FHH last season wasn't a happy rider either when going to hunt. She picked up on routine very quickly and became a little mouthy when excited about flying. She would just talk through the the GH, not bounce around though. After 3-4 days of switching up the routine she learned to calm down while riding. I would take her to work, short trips to local stores or let her spend the night in her GH.
