Well I'm torn. I started my mews last weekend and went online to look for the BEST flooring available. Pea gravel was on my mind, so I checked nafex and they say NO PEA GRAVEL! It isn't good on talons. Apparently they all favor sand over there.
Well I like the idea of sand, it seems the cleanest, softest and easiest to maintain, but I come over here and people are going NO SAND! Ohmaigawd... Is there ANYTHING in falconry, that people don't dispute or argue over!? ;D
--By the way let me make it clear, that I'm sorry if I come off as disrespectful or anything, I really don't mean to question any body's methods, there are just so many, and I'm confused! --
So ...I thought it over for a few hours... And I took in consideration that I will want to freeloft my bird, and also that I wish to go after squirrels, so I will be using squirrel chaps, (which ARE Removable, right?) There are also other removable anklets out there. I also read that you're not supposed to feed in the mews, because of aggression, (or something, I wish I could find the information again...) and that sand will impact the crop...
And well... If I follow these rules strictly, I wouldn't have a problem, right? There's no chafing of equipment or anything, nothings ingested, and talons and feet are well taken care of. PLEASE, PLEASE tell me if I'm totally going off in a bad direction here, or I'm missing something important! I want to do my mews the best way!
Oh, by the way I also wrote down a diagram of sorts that layers, from bottom to top, chicken wire, Filter sheet, gravel, filter sheet, sand. I think I did this because of moisture, I live in WA, so it's very very wet here, all the time. And I didn't want the sand to stay moist and cling... (This is, if my idea above is approved..)
Okay, bringing the discussion away from flooring... If I wanted to freeloft in a weathering, like Raptorreds (I hope it's alright, that I used you as an example.) would it be acceptable to use the soccer netting stuff? Or perhaps mosquito netting would be a better choice? Problem with that is tearing though...
Next question, just because I just thought of this. Is it okay to keep the bath pan outside, in the weathering? Do birds spend time in the weathering, during the molt and such?
Next is tires... I have tons of tires! And I have seen them used as perches. How can I tap into this source? Is it necessary to cover one in turf? Can I cut them in half and wrap them around something?
Well I think that's it for now, Try not to flame me, it took a lot to get up the courage to post here. I'll add more later, thanks for looking and bye!
