Sid my first year MRT is now in his first molt. He did take a few squirrels towards the end of his first season but they were easy ones and he would not really take them out of the trees.
In the molt I have been feeding him Squirrel regularly and he eats it well, and then a live squirrel by pure fate dropped off the aviary roof where a nut songbird feeder was and in through a very small section of it. He then ran around the aviary like a Looney. Sid being at fat weight just stared at him and was half hearted to go for it but I think his nerves got to him a bit by its speed, however after about 10 minutes he stopped looking a bit anxious and just followed it around with much interest. Well sods law it squeezed itself between the mesh and got away.
The question is. Would this of helped him to get more self-confident and less edgy about them next season
In every conceivable manner, the family is link to our past, bridge to our future.
I personally think the only reason the Sid wasn't balls to the wall after the squirrel was because he is fat and happy. Had his weight been right I don't think the half hearted chase would have ended with the squirrel escaping. Every bird is different but I'd guess that since he caught a few last season he will be more accustom to seeing them as food instead of an "unknown" target.
