My sponsor and I have begun the construction of my mews! It wasn't what I originally planned, but as long as my sponsor thinks it's going to be fine (and I think that too) I am happy. The weathering yard and mew are separate structures.
The weathering yard is 10x10x8. It's a basic cube, simple as that with welded wire, aviary netting and a lot of poultry staples.
The mew is an enormous 16x10x8 foot structure. There are two rooms. One room is 6x10 and will act as a storage and prep area. The other section of the mew is obviously 10x10 and will be the raptor area.
As of now the frames and doors are up. Frame consists of 4x4 posts and 2x4x8's, 2x4x10's and 2x4x16's. I bought basic pre-hung doors. There are a few more pieces that we are going to add for extra support and reinforcement.
As of now everything that has been constructed has been coated with an oil based primer. I am waiting to get the plywood for the walls (it's not cheap) before I put a few layers of oil based paint over the primer.
Not sure what I am leaving out, probably a few things. I'll just say this:
I hate oil based paint/primer! If you plan on using it, buy some turpentine as well! Also, I plan on purchasing a paint sprayer, screw using only a roller and brush!
Hopefully everything will be complete by the end of the month!
You will find out how small your mews really is when you start putting up the plywood. My mews is 12X24X8 and I thought it was huge before I put up the plywood. I have 2 chambers that are 6X12 and one chamber that is 12X12 and it sure seems small when I get inside of it.
