i'm with him that might be cheaper and I have heard of it being better.
it is not cheaper then the chainlink, as in id get that free
but it IS better than the chainlink!
Carefull, Saying it is better is a stong term for simple netting. If you are free lofting the bird it would be better, still dangerous, but it lacks in security that many falconers need on their mews and weathering yards. I don't use chain link because I am afraid of the bird breaking out..... I think your design is interesting and a space saver to boot, but I have one question....and I make this question as it has become an issue many times with many apprentices of different states. What will you do about drainage for the mews? They require that by law and the game warden may not like the elevated structure with a pooch running below him.
Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines "Give a man a fish, and you'll feed him for a day; give him a religion................ and he'll starve to death while praying for a fish."
for drainage, there will be multiple 4 in diameter holes in the the floor, or 1/4inch gaps in the wood of the mew, with hardware cloth covering that (the metal square stuff) to retain the pea gravel.
the dog run idea is out due to the fact it wont be chain link...
further drainage stuff:
the draining will go under the mew and out onto that slope and then down the slope.
the "porch" (im going to draw this up for you all later lol) is basically going to be the mews floor, only larger than needed, and the mew built up from it, is what i gather from what my dads telling me about his idea.
really? ive met a few people that have had no problem with it.
what would you use to free loft?
As I mentioned before I have a weathering area that has avian netting over it. However, in my case I tether my birds in it. They cannot fly around inside.
Im not a free lofter so I cant give advise about that.

wolf, do you free loft in your mews? I can understand not freelofting in a weathering area but i do find not freelofting at least durring the moult, well, i dont have the word for it, not negative and not positive. i just cant see why not at least in the mews.

Nah, I dont in the Mew either. Also, I have nothing against those that free loft I just dont.
Here's a good link where I've already discussed it.
alrighty.. here are the pics of the shed, and where we may/most likely but the weathering...
the shed:
inside dimensions are ~8x10x12 feet
the area where the weathering shall go:
i have yet to measure it, but its big lol.
the gate on the one end, is gonna be taken down, chain link put there, and the aviary netting will be about 6'' from the chain link, I'm wondering if that hole area will create a wind tunnel or something though... the wind really doesn't blow that hard on that side of the house though, the sun there is eaaaaarly morning-just about mid noon. so the bird wouldn't get the extreme heat of the afternoon in the summer and such.
the aviary netting will come down the rock wall, and ill have multiple perches sticking out of the rocks and through the netting, i plan on putting some on the side of the house also
we will have a double door system, one door opens into the double door system, turn left and you go to the mew, turn right and you go into the weathering.
I'm going to make a cabinet inside the mew for scale etc.
freezer will go on the porch.
we will cover everything inside the mew with a bird-safe water sealer. using pea gravel on the floor, and as my dads usual way of making things, in case of water, there is a slight slope in the floor, un noticeable, yet water will slide down it, and we may put rubber over the wood and the sides a bit, to increase drainage.
after i get back from Oregon with Aurelia and her Sponsor, I'm going to remove all that wood, all the SH!@t over there in that area, move dirt over and around and make it mostly level and nice looking.
as for a window, we can really only put one in it, or we can put 2, but one would be facing a rock wall. we are thinking a 2' high, by 4' long window, facing the house. if we put one on the side facing the house behind ours, I'm afraid the little kids that live their would be jumping on their trampoline and, as they have done before, throw things over the fence, and i don't want anything getting through the bars on the window and getting my bird!
idk about perch set up inside the mew yet. pea gravel will be the flooring
and yes, that wire in the second place, means that their IS electricity to that building. because my over all plan is, keep bird to the end of august, release, trap a new one, in the moult, i can have special lights in there to help with moulting.

Personally I wouldn't put the window towards the house, I like to let the birds have some mental stimulation. I would put it facing the other way, but put mosquto netting on the outside of the window and then 1/4" or smaller hardware cloth outside that, all outside of your vertical bars. That will keep things from being thrown in, as well as mosquitoes, as well as letting your bird see out. Just an idea

Ok I get the whole plan now and about the aviary netting i wouldnt free loft in a weathering area because if you do have a bird the jumps around alot theres little hole were its switsted to be woven and it will fray up feathers just seen some cases of this i helped a breeder tear his down for that reason im using it for my air protecting in my weathering area and the rest of the yard is surounded by chain link so it can be locked but i think you got a good plan going
well now there a bird in the mew im happy now the bunny slaying beggins
im going to listen to my sponsor, and not a new apprentice. my sponsor has free lofted all his red tails with aviary netting, and has no problems, so again, i think i will listen to him.
