Not sure about the weathering... it would be nice to have one anyway. One of the things I do notice though, is that it should go "floor joists > mesh > floor boards" so if the substrate gets moved around the bird can't get hurt by it. I'd also worry about gravel dulling talons. I'm going to be using pasdded astroturf myself. Also another thing to note... unless the bird is tethered it is a danger without the double entry

Morgan, and Acre. depening on where you live you HAVE to have a Weathering, like in WA State, its a 10x10 weathering. Morgan, if the bird is untrained it should ALWAYS be tethered. If you connect weathering to Mews, you can use the weathering as the double "door". When Aaron had his coopers, he entered through the weathering, then exited the main door. id recommend to both Peagravel>astroturf. morgan... y would the bird be on the floor that much?
matt - you never know... and in CA a weathering is NOT required... so yeh STOP TALKING DOWN TO ME. It is really frustrating, I happen to know what i'm talking about too... and what about when the bird IS trained and freelofted.
virtually every thing i've read says that peagravel = bad and it dulls talons, and to go with padded astroturf

let me rephrase what i said "DEPENDING where you live you MIGHT have to have one." DEPENDING as in... DIFFERENT STATES... and i know, that you know what ur talking about. we get alot of very intellegent posts from you, almost everyone one u make. including the one htat i was commenting on. and when the bird IS trained and freelofted, it shouldnt be scared of you, and if it isnt fat, i see no reason y you should worry about it, a tidbit could then get it to the fist if it isnt fat.
and on what youve read. im just saying. i RECOMMEND, not saying DO IT. Peagravel and astroturf seem like a good combo, let me change that and make it a IMO. Gravel helps with drainage and mutes, while astroturf OVER gravel keeps em sharp.
im sry if i offended you morgan, i really am, im putting my 2 cents where it doesnt really belong. and im sorry about that. i just think everyone should be heard on what theyve read or heard, or personal experiance. and on the double door, my personal experiance with Aarons mews, and what ive heard is that it isnt a necisity, yes i am going to put on one mine probably, but you dont NEED one.
i dont purposly talk down to you. im stating what i know. once more, im extremly sorry morgan, everyon here on this forum knows you will make a wonderful falconer.
Now, to 40Acre.. youi should try to hook up with the state some how. phoning them? email? mailing them even! they know more then you think . ask for thier falconry information packet. that has alot of info about mews and such also. plus everything else u need to know

I wasn't offended, just frustrated.. relax, here a weathering isn't necessary, but a double door is. If some of the stuff I say is unusual, it's probably just CA, CA seems to have unususal regulations. This is CA regs on Mews/weathering:
Note: the inspectors are accustomed to seeing an 8' x 8' x 8' plywood box with vertical barring on the windows and some sort of double door arrangement, a perch, and a bath. A red-tail can be free-lofted (flies loose in the hawk house, as opposed to being tethered) safely in such. If you get too creative, you may get a chance to be inspected a second time. Follow your sponsor’s advice!
1. Space to allow easy access and maintenance. 2. Space to allow bird to fully extend wings. 3. At least one window. 4. All windows have vertical bars/rods on inside. 5. Secure door - easily closed, with lock. 6. Other doors, if any, to protect facility. 7. Floor surface, dry or well drained - can be easily cleaned. 8. One perch of acceptable design. 9. A form of double dooring to prevent the hawk from escaping.
Note: Federal regulations allow the game warden inspecting your facilities to decide - based on environmental factors - if you have to provide a weathering area.
WEATHERING AREA (if you decide to have one whether or not the inspector requires it. The weathering area provided will be inspected for the following)
1. Space to allow a tethered bird to bate without striking wings on top or sides. 2. Sides of weathering area fenced with suitable material to keep predators out. 3. Top of weathering area fenced with suitable material to keep predators out, OR 4. Top of weathering area open provided weathering perch(es) are taller than 6½ feet high.
Some may not be necessary, but it is a good idea & good pointers to follow. I took it off the CHC website (speaking of which, I am now a member ;D ;D ;D)

Morgan, you should remember that this is an open forum. People are going to put thier opinions in and you can't comtrol that. You seem to think that everyone is talking down to you, when they are just submitting thier opinions or ideas. Don't be so sensitive and just soak in what you think is relevant and let the rest go. Every one gets along on this forum which is more than I can say about most of the other forums that I have been on. I hope you don't think that I am talking down to you, cuz i have better things to do than that.
No it just some of the way things are phrased (and i'm not mad) like for instance, I made a comment and matt said that i was wrong and i "shouldn't talk when i'm wrong" <-- its that kinda talk that frustrates me. I believe i've also said before, that as sad as it is, i'm extremely defensive because that's the only way i can survive in this house (stepdad and sister).
rofl. im wiht morgan on the "defensive" i have an older sis, and an older bro, and a lil bro, and being picked on all the way through up to 8th grade doesnt help lol
id show WA rules.. but its not on thier website.. and i dont want to write all that out lol
Though this is off topic, and i won't do it again... www.themodernapprentice.com the person who created that site is from washington, and has washington laws and such on it.
shes from British Columbia morgan. ive talked to her alot via email, shes really nice, and if i had the money, id go to canada to go hawking with her lol.
