I am a Licensed falconer at the general level, I am considering starting a falconry school in Murray, Kentucky. I would like to get some people's oppinions. Below is what I propose to provide at the falconry school, if anyone has any sugguestions or critques please let me know.
BLUEGRASS RAPTORS AND FALCONRY SCHOOL
Come be part of what has been called “the sport of kings”. We offer several programs for people of all ages, no previous experience necessary! Our aim is to share with you the pleasure, excitement, and exhilaration of falconry. Also, a fascination and respect for raptors that has enthralled people for over 4,000 years. This unusual and fascinating experience is by appointment only! However, short notice bookings can usually be accommodated. Come be a part of what is reputed to be the world’s oldest sport. You will never forget the moment when a hawk first lands on your gloved fist!
Introductory lesson:
During an introductory lesson you will learn the basics of falconry, and raptor biology/ecology. Your instructor will introduce you to the hawk; explain a little history of falconry, and how raptors are trained. You will learn basic falconry terms and use those terms throughout the lesson. Most importantly you will learn proper care techniques for trained birds of prey. This hands on time will show you what a typical day as a falconer is like. Duration of about 1 hour.
Cost: $50.00
Falconry hunt:
During a falconry hunt you will accompany your instructor into the field (weather permitting) to chase live WILD game with a bird of prey. Here you will have the opportunity to experience an actual hunt. This usually consists of a leisurely stroll through the autumn woods, marked with moments of pure exhilaration as you watch a chase unfold over your head. Here you will learn to cast the bird off your fist into the trees, and then to recall the bird. Due to the nature of the hunting style, and the fact that we are engaging in fair chase of 100% wild game there is NO guarantee of success, so be forewarned.
(Insect repellant provided).
Duration of at least 1 hour.
Cost: $75.00
Falconry/Raptor Education for groups:
Demonstrations cover various aspects of both falconry and raptors and can be tailored to fit ANY group’s needs; School groups, Scouts, Retirement communities, or Business events. After your instructor finishes with an informative and entertaining commentary there maybe opportunities to handle the raptors, have photos taken, and talk informally with your instructor. An instructor can even bring a bird to join your group for cocktails, where instructor(s) will talk informally with the guests, and there is sometimes a chance for a limited number of guests to have a very close encounter and handle one of the birds.
(A good photo opportunity)
Duration of about 1 hour (flexible)
Cost: Price on Application (~$100.00)
Adopt-a-hawk:
By adopting a hawk you help to off set the cost of food/vet bills/and equipment for the birds. You will receive; a photo of a bird of your choice (suitable for framing), the story behind the bird, a monthly report (6) about that bird and other interesting information regarding falconry, the birds, and our company. Also for students (K-12th only please), you can write to a licensed falconer and receive answers via U.S. mail or E-mail to any falconry/raptor related questions you might have.
Cost: $10.00
M.S.U. student discount !!!
We reserve the right to refuse or end services to any one at any time.
