I am looking for patterns and equipment for my future bird.
Right now I have some SUPER thick cowhide, about .09 thick. Almost anything I make will be to heavy for the bird using that thick material.
So what I need to know is thickness and type of material for jess, lures, leashes, anything that the bird will need for function. I know of the posted perches for the bird so I dont need anyhelp for that.
Also where some of this material can be purchased, and pictures of finished products, if possiable.

if you are planning on getting one or two K birds I would say buy these they are cheap enough and they will last a while. just tell Forrest which bird you are going for and he will make them to size. the 2 Jesse's is just one or the other which ever one you like. other than that I would say buy a kangaroo hide. I use the anklets and twisted Jesse's on my birds and the anklets make it so there is no scale damage and are nice looking also. they have been tested on RTs for 2 years strait and never had a problem but I replace them every year.

Thanx for all your help.
According to my sponsor, a lot of the equipment is just much smaller, but the same.
We won't be using grommets for anklets, pinholes work just as well plus you won't need to remove the jesses.
The slits in jesses are just pinholes because the leash clip is nothing more than a small lanyard clip or coastlock swivels (those fishing safety pin looking things).
There is a forum on Yahoo that's for Kestrel flyers and there's plenty of info there in the files and in the photos.
Matt Mullenix's book, "American Kestrels in Modern Falconry" is a great book to have.
I've made leashes and jesses using 100# test braided dacron.

I joined the yahoo group but it suked, maybe it was the wrong group. Can you post a link to it so I can make sure it is the same one? thanx
I just came back from tandy leathers and asked about kangaroo leather. BAD NEWS, potentaly, apperantly some countries, australia included, is going to stop shipping hides. I wasnt clear of why, but the price of leather is fixing to shoot up due to this.
can anybody confirm this for me?
what thickness of hide is good for jess'? .8 and thinner or .8 and thicker?

its around the same weight but is stronger. as for the kangaroo not being imported any more yes that is true might want to buy it while you can it is the best stuff to use for anklets (light, thin, strong). the importation is on the US side for getting it in from what I hear (just like anything in this sport).

I don't want FB to get mad at me if it's against the rules, so I'll send it to you via PM.
I did not hear that about 'roo leather. Good thing my sponsor is going to Australia this summer and picking some up to bring home.
It's a good group. Everyone's been helpful and the conversations going on have been great for someone just learning, like me.
I can't wait until this fall when I can trap my first bird!!!
Just do a search in the message archives to see what's been posted already before you ask anything. Some of them will be quick to point out that "We've already talked about this, look in the archive" if you post a question.
Killjoy get American Kestrels in Modern Falconry by Matthew Mullenix. It has patterns/life sized pictures of all the equiptment you need like hoods, jesses, anklets, perch setups, and so on. Its a great book for anyone considering a kessie.

I agree. The book my Mathew was great. And also the only book on kestrels i think lol. He does has life sized drawings. The only thing i did was make them longer. And they work fine.
