Hey guys... is .6 mm kangaroo leather thick enough for a female red tail? I'm looking into buying a nice hide from someone, and the hide is .6 mm, so yeh, is it enough?
try to find the Oz the leahter is. i have 1-2 Oz leather (cowhide) and it should be enough. if im right (not surehtough) kangeroo is stronger, but if its 1-2 ounce, that should be enough
Kangaroo is so much better than anything else. I have found other hides far to stiff for their legs and create sores if you have a rather energetic bird.
The only time i would use Calf or anything stiff is if the leg has been broken and the cast off but i would still use very thin Kangaroo underneath like i did when my bird broke hers

ew ew ew... i was researching hides... kangaroo the website says... it was kangaroo leather sex whips ewwwwww. and how is it that ALL my threads get off topic? i asked if .6 mm roo hide was good enough...
the guy wants like $24 for a vegetable tanned black 6ft hide, just under 6 square feet.
*EDIT*
ah nevermind, thats the shipping price... he just e-mailed me back. he has several hides ranging from 5-10 squared feet at about 9 dollars per square foot. Is 9 p/square ft good?
*AHAHA DOUBLE EDIT*
okay so yeh the ones on e-bay are older leather, so they put it on e-bay at a discount rate. Those are like 20-something dollars. The fresh new ones are $9 per square feet
*FINAL EDIT.... I HOPE* So yeh i did the math, and for a 5'x5' hide from the guy on e-bay, it costs (w/shipping) roughly $243+... I can get a 7-8 SqFt black veg tanned hide, for a bird that weighs 30+ oz (a.k.a good for a Female RT) for $87.60

FYI I bought a roo hide on ebay 2 yrs. ago, from the same guy that's selling them now. (just looked) I payed something like $19 + shipping. The hide is good, in fact I still have over 1/2 of it. Leather doesn't go bad if stored properly. I payed by paypal and received it in less than a week.
