who do you get your falconry equipent from? i am gathering information so i know where to get mine, ;D , i am trying to learn as much as possible before i fully commit mysielf to the sport.
Hi, The question of where to get your gear is a good one. There are honest dealers with beautiful glossy catalogs. Ebay can be a source if used carefully. There are craftsmen and women out there without websites or catalogs who make great stuff. You can make things you need yourself with a bit of study and practice. It has been said here before, but is worth repeating. Follow the advice of your sponsor or mentor. Falconry can involve a considerable investment. Don't buy things that won't work for your situation. Don't be in a rush to buy gear before you have "felt the bottom" and have a plan. One last thought, I hope I'm not the only one who has benefited from the generosity of others. Falconers can be tight-wads. They can also be very giving, (especially if they don't need something anymore).

No your not.
I'd say 75-80 of My equipment came from my sponser in some way or another. But falconers are not willing to just give away there stuff to someone they dont know.
You have to really prove yourself. Even during apprenticeship you have to show your worth the equipment because most apprentices wash out.
Well, you were all very lucky. I was not given a bloody thing when i started! I also had a horrid sponsor my first year.... bad story too long for this thread. Anyways, you do not have to buy much. All you really need to buy is a scale, maybe a perch, and probably some hoods, some swivels, a bathpan, thats all i can think of. Oh and grommets and setters. Anything of leather other than hoods [jesses, anklets] you can make, leashes are easy out of parachute cord or something simliar, my advice is make as much as you can and have a falconer look at it to make sure its ok. Even better have them teach you how to make it. I know you said you are in Ontario and its harder to find people there, but if memory serves there is a large falconry school up there somewhere, cant think of the site off the top of my head, but im sure they could atleast send you in the right direction. Falconry does not have to cost you tons of money, its all in how lazy you are. If you really wanted to, you could spend thousands and order everything pre-made. Or you could do the real thing, buy only the necessities, and make everything yourself. Not to mention the ego you will be sporting knowing that everything on your bird was crafted by you.
As for bags, my advice is dont buy them from big companies. Look for the type of bag you need, then make something work. I bought a 3 bag waist belt at walmart for 15$ three years ago, and its still in perfect condition [well except the blood stains ].
My advice- Make what you can. Buy what you need, no more. You will feel better knowing you did it yourself, and so will your wallet.

ya the falconry center is about an hour hour and a half away, my aunt drove me by it 3 years ago and thats when i started to look up stuff on falconry then 2 years ago i went to medevial times, for the 123 time lol i love that place, and saw the lanner falcons fly and i thought thats wht i want to get int o so i asked my cousins neighbour about friday(his RT) and he told me how to get my licence and stuff, he is still an apprentice though so i can't get a sposer there lol he drives 2 hours to his sponsers 2 a month, but ya i am thinking of doind alot of it by myself i know how to do some leather work and stuff great advide guys thanks alot ^_^
With a sponsor 2 hours away, you will end up doing alot of it by yourself. But you WILL have to have a sponsor, just the way things work I've done alot by myself and I'm waiting for September 19th to finally put all I've done by myself to the ultimate test ;D
I'm doing a similar thing. I don't have a sponsor yet, but I want to choose mine VERY carefully. I'm going to wait until christmas vacation to even continue studying for the test, so that way my school work won't interfere, or vise versa, particularly. And I'll scedual the permit exam for the end of the vacation, around new years. But soon i must send for a sponsor list as well, so he/she may help me with the equipment (hopefully).
But i hope you get a sponsor! Especially if they are in your area.
The only thing i'm afraid of is getting a sponsor who just wants to be my apprentice because i have access to a whoooooooole ton of land and "rabbit farms", and i really dont want to be used.
lol, good idea! I won't *wink wink* But what if he wants to go hunting with me? He's gotta have his own hunting grounds, right? He doesn't have to know.....*snickers*

She was very nice, and happens to be one of those falconers who insists I make all my own equiptment. But I prefer it to be that way. I am going to visit her next week, and she said I can hunt with her in the field =) Now if only my parents will let me start my apprenticeship next summer, lol.
