I have only had/used a ring perch for my redtail. Was wondering what would be the more popular perch for buteo's if you were using either for indoor or outdoor & the cost was equal ?
I suppose most people use bow perches for the Buteos. I believe ring perches are more designed for the accipiters or smaller buteos. At least that is what I read in one of my falconry books. Personally, it really doesn't matter as long as the bird you have can perch comfortably and that it doesn't run the risk of getting tangled if the she or he decides to bait. And of course, it allows the bird to easily regain its perch. Other than that I can't see a major advantage or disadvantage using one or the other. Someone else may have a better answer or opinion on the matter but as far as I know its more of a personal preference. My sponsor fly's a Sharpy and he uses a a very small bow perch when he perches the bird outside for sun. Now if your talking about building perches in your mews, just remember to have at least two, possibly three. Most important is to use different surfaces for each perch, that way the bird has different widths and such like it would in the wild. Just make sure you have the room in your mew to do so. The last thing you want to do is make an obstacle course.
I don't think it matters a lot which perch you use. Like Tanaro2 said I have read that Bow is for Buteo's and Rings are for Accip's. The only reasoning I think is that Rings are "usually" taller and better for the Accipiters longer and more fragile tail feathers. I have use a Bow for both a Red Tail and a Kestrel and it has worked great (not the same perch, a larger and a smaller one). My oppinion would be that in order for a Ring to be as safe as it can be it needs to be a rotating ring perch. The only thing about using a Ring indoors would be if the bird bated and turned the perch where he is faceing the wall he might not want to stay on it.
