Dont mean to change the topic or anything but I want to ask a few things. -First, does everyone think that braintanned dear hide is strong enough to carry a redtail on? I was looking on the internet and though its expensive i SEEMS easy to make. -Second, with this same material be tough enough for jesses, chapps and the like?
anyway my question was what is the comparitive thickness to cowhide, moose , kangaroo ect.
i did not see anything about thickness in your question. Deer hide is strechy no matter the quality. FB I agree. I think it would work good for work glove

Deer hide is stretchy, no matter what the quality. My next door neighbor is a taxidermist and has placed in a few national competitions. When he tans a hide for someone, it's still stretchy.
Brain tanned hide is something I know a bit about. I used to be very interested in historical re-enacting. I have leather clothing and moccasins made of brain tan deer, elk and moose. The difference in brain tan and other tans is physical rather than chemical. Brain tan can be pierced through with a regular needle, chemical tan usually cannot. I don't know how a gauntlet would hold up. I have a feeling jesses and anklets would be to stretchy.
I think a fidgety hawk would make short work of anklets of brain tan. My opinion, no previous testing on the subject. There are no harmful chemicals such as in chrome tanned leather. No dyes either. Washable for the most part way more than chem. tanned leather. Someone make up a elk or moose hide gauntlet and do a test. They could put beadwork on it for the bird to pick off and use for rangle !
