sky rider, i want the hood blocks you can make please. i have been searching for them for a long while, and i want to learn to make them. email me at dothanfalconry@yahoo.com thanks!TEXT
To thread braces, you need to cut vertical slits in the hood at certain places. Then you slide the hood braces into them, alternating it. It really depends on what kind of hood you are making. Buy Phillip Glasiers "Falconry and Hawking" It will show you how to make an Anglo-Indian hood and a Falconry Centre hood or something close to that. I can't remember what he calls it. I've made two Anglo-Indian hoods with that book and I'm impressed with the directions and simplicity. Look back to about page 8 or 9 of this thread to see what it looks like.
It needs to be stiff to stick out a bit so you don't have to fumble for them, since you're gonna be pulling one with your right hand and the other with your teeth. You don't wanna be fumbling with your face that close to that beak! Check your local craft store and see what they got. You might be able to find something similar to the gortex that some people use. Go to a meet or when you go hawking with someone take a good look at the hood they use and you'll get an idea. I tried the threading directions in Beebe's 'A Falconry Manual'. It's a little different than how my sponosor threads them but it works just fine. It seems confusing til you've done it, then it makes perfect sense.
Okay, here's my situation. I'm a pre-apprentice and would like to try my hand at making hoods. I'm looking to get a Male RT once I do begin the sport. I would like to know about approximate hood sizes for that sex/species of bird? I have the Slipjer's/whatever software where you enter in the size of the birds head in millimetres to generate. I dont wanna try making hoods are are FAR too big or small to fit especially after throwing money at buying some leather like 'Roo which is pricey to begin with. I know it's all individual to the bird but if I can take alot of the guess-work out beforehand, why not? eg: avg male rt head size is 45mm then I'll make a few hoods ranging between 38-52mm instead of wasting time and material making 75mm hoods. Any help would be nice. Thanks

It is extremely easy to fix a hood that is too loose and flops off the bird by a head shake or by talon. Measure the height of the chin strap (the part right under the beak opening) and then cut a piece of leather to that height and as long as the hood is round. Glue this strip to the inside of the hood so that the ends are matched with the ends of the hood when closed and after it dries, put it on the bird. That extra strip makes it more tight so it won't come off. If it still does, add another strip of leather.
