I don't use barrel chaps for headcount, i've heard of less bad bites with barrel chaps compared to skirted, hence why i like the bird to be able to see the toes
OK FB you have heard ...I have seen. I have empirical evidence to back me up, not hearsay. Brewer has been hawking squirrels for a very long time. He developed the idea of protection from bites. No one else. Many have taken his idea and ran with it. Perhaps it is now improved upon. YOU are NO squirrel hawker. Stick to what you know not what you have heard. Any type of chap is better than none. Bottom line: Protect your bird if you hawk squirrels and get the opinions of those that do it...NOT those that don't. Yarak
If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away

Ethics make the individual, not the other way around.
I love barrel chaps. In fact, I had Gary make me a pair for my THH. Not because I will ever fly him on squirrels, which I don't agree with (THHs on squirrels that is) but I like how sturdy they are and how the bell sits on the side of the chap. I decided not to use them on Jefe but have put them on Jack instead. With his leg "issues" I've found them to be the perfect way to reduce the likelihood of further injury. -Joe
i like skerted chaps better, they have more protection to the feet, and give the squirrel a place to bite onto..you can see my chaps on the classified ads under my squirrel chaps.
Here are some chaps I made this week that sort of combine skirted with barrel, I think. The squirrel I caught Thursday bit the "fake toes" on the chap just before my bird closed its mouth shut with her other foot. I'm new to squirrel hawking but I agree that chaps of some sort are the way to go.
