I was wondering which study guide I should use to study for the texas test. I know in the past the chc was used, but I have heard that now it is modeled after the NY test? I was also wondering if a dog run could be used to be turned into a mews in texas? Any help is appreciated, thanks.
Texas switched to a new test about two years ago. I was one of the first to take it. I'm not sure if it was modeled after anything in particular. Iirc they said at the THA meets / open business meetings that they asked people to send potential questions to the state for consideration. But that was slightly before my time; several others in THA would probably be able to tell you better. I don't remember getting anything I recognized out of the study guides, but then again I never did get the study guides, just used other prep material that I'm pretty sure was based on them, so what do I know?
I personally recommend people get intimately familiar with falconry terminology first and foremost; I got around half of my answers from having a strong understanding of the language. Then buy or borrow North American Falconry and Hunting Hawks and study that. Then study the state laws very well; I think the current reputation is the law questions are considered unexpectedly difficult, although that's only based on two reports, one of which is my own. Modern Apprentice isn't bad, either.
Whether a dog run can be turned into a mews will depend on what your sponsor says. I know there's a few "mews" designs which apparently pass inspection that are basically a box in the middle of such a run; I believe there's one on Modern Apprentice. But you usually want to run it by your sponsor, since some are more picky than others about mews, and you may not want to be forced to rebuild your mews if your sponsor isn't satisfied with it.
You didn't say whether you've found a sponsor or not. In case you don't already know, in Texas, you need a sponsor before you can take the test. Unless that changed when the test did or something, but I'm fairly sure it didn't.
