Hi Guys, I'm back again and after a positive result with my first question, I thought that I would follow it up with another question about leashes and their uses? This time I'm wondering about the leash 'extender' and why it was introduced to the system, what's it used for and why not just make the leash those couple of inches longer in the first place? Thanks for taking the time guys, Bruce
The leash extender is designed to allow a falconer to still use a traditional leash & swivel set up, but push the swivel back far enough so that it clears the tail of the bird, helping to avoid damage.
Ok thank you. I see the Sampo swivel being used everywhere, granted it is a brilliant design and virtually unbreakable, but with such a good swivel available, why do we not see more of the Sampo Coastlock snap swivel being used? I would argue that it would be quicker to install and un-install and again with the right breaking strain, it would appear virtually unbreakable from/by a bating hawk/falcon? I appreciate people's input on this subject and I think that this is more of an ongoing discussion than a series of questions with right/wrong answers?? BAT
The coast locks break with larger Hawks. I used #8 400lb test, Opening and closing the clasp weakens the strength of the wire loop and they eventually break. For quick tethering like out in the field, I used bullet jesses and fly without jesses. For secure tethering I use braided jesse sampo and leash, 4 strand nylon braided leash, and falconers knot.

While we are on the subject of secure tethering around the mews etc., what sort of perches do people use for securing their birds when they have their birds 'in work' daily and the birds are housed overnight in a 2metre cubic holding pen whereby the bird is easily picked up, put down and supervised during the hunting, training season? I was thinking of a long block perch running from wall to wall about eight inches tall with a gap underneath for newspaper to catch the mutes? Please join in guys, the more info shared the bigger the picture. . . BAT
