So I have seen on here and a few other places of people making gear out of paracord. I have a decent amount of it sitting around, so I am hopeful. Seems the go-to has been leather. So here is my question:
Some places seem to say only use leather when out hunting, but paracord can be used in most other occasions. Is this correct?
I know paracord can get pulls in it and can bind against rough surfaces. What are yalls experiences?
Also, is kangaroo leather the goto, or should I be looking for something else? Planning on starting to make some of the gear while studying.
Roo is my Jess leather of choice. It's very tough for its thickness. And can take a decent beating. If leather is used always condition it with a Jess grease before using on a hawk. It will last much longer.
I agree with the line of reasoning that parachord can and will snag on thorns and rough surfaces, that could compromise a hawks safety in certain terrain. If you will be hunting around prickly things take that into account.
But there are other alternatives. Braided Dacron jesses for instance. Very durable. And very resistant to snags. I braid my own Dacron leashes and jesses, even so. My hunting jess of choice is roo. It's cheap to replace if the hawk tugs it off in the field, and it just does a great job. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

I don't fly with jesses in because of the risk of things snagging. If i was going to, I would use roo leather. I love braided dacron jesses for at home/mews/tethering, they're all I use. Mine are from Aurelia at Cazador Leather (see pictures on right side of page. I am biased, she's my girlfriend, but others on the forum have her jesses as well) and I wouldn't use anything else except roo leather, and only if I couldn't convince Aurelia to make me a new pair of jesses. Sorry her website is a bit bland and old, I need to update it. All the hoods on there are over a year old. I just started a new job but I'll update it eventually. If you're on facebook, she keeps that much more up to date- www.facebook.com/CazadorFalconry
