I have been reading up on jesses and I can not seem to find a place that tells me how to determine proper jess length. I know it depends on the bird, but is there a formula out there I am missing?
Generally it depends on the size and type of perch and what swivel, extender, and leash set up you are using. Its hard to say with out knowing what your set up will be but personally I use 8 inche jesses. But that is so they are short enough to not slip around the block. You will learn what you like and what works best for you through using them and through your sponsors advice.

Thanks, that was more or less what I was thinking the answer would be. It was a question on a practice test I found. It really stumped me. Everywhere I read about making jesses, they always mention cutting the leather or cord to the length you need, but never how to determine length.

You should specify that you use 8" jesses on your redtail. A kestrel I'm sure would be a different story.
A falcons jesses should never be the same as or longer than the diameter of its block perch. The reason being is that they can end up "straddling" the block, where one jess goes around one side, and the other goes around the opposite.
