Hey, I have a question about an idea I had about the entrance to my mews/weathering yard. Do you think that hanging a tarp from above the door frame and staking it down so that it is tight would be a good way to add some security to the entrance? Do you have any improvements on that? I also thought that maybe one of those cargo nets woven out of about 3/4 inch rope would work too because they are pretty heavy and could stop a hawk trying to fly out. It would be a challenge to find one of those though. Thanks for the advice.
This is certainly the ideal, to build a fully functional double door system. It's safer, easier to manage, and is going to look nicer/be longer lasting.
However, if you cannot do this due to building or financial restrictions or whatever have you, the staked tarp idea you are describing could work. You might also consider constructing a frame to put netting over so you have a little more room to maneuver.
However, if you cannot build a secure double door, you might consider using a tethering system rather than freelofting as the SAFEST alternative.

I don't think this would work for a number of reasons. You run the risk of feather damage (cargo net) or worse tangled legs or wings. Second over time you would be constantly tightening it due to things coming loose and run the risk that one day a stake would come out and you wouldn’t notice.
If you are going to build a frame to put the netting over you might as well put a double door in.
Agreed with steveouk, go buy some pressure treated , cypress or cedar 2x2 or 2x4, A small roll of wire mesh like you'd use for a weathering area and build a small 3x3 entrance " cage". It won't annoy close neighbors, you can grow vines or climbing plants on it and you have a wire mesh door you can lock to keep predators and trespassers out of your mews. Not to mention a secure hawk. Murphy has a way of making all omitted details surface eventually, why chance it when the fix is less than $100. You can always get some free pallets and a used door off Craigslist and build something out of that as well. A little redneck ingenuity can go a long way...
