I've been very interested in birds for quite some time now. It must run in the family, because my ancestors were keeping birds as pets and participating in falconry for generations. My last name, in fact, is 'Bird.' Somewhere many generations ago, it started being spelled like the animal and I'm unsure why, but I'd love to figure it out.
I'm not sure where to take my interest though. I've been thinking about going at it from a falconry perspective, a research perspective, and a conservation perspective. Perhaps I will eventually do all 3.
I'd like the start somewhere right away. I've been having some Parkinson's-type symptoms for the past few years that I'm currently in the process of seeking treatment for. The worst part is down-time; I feel much better if I can keep myself occupied in my spare time.
I thought recently about building an owl house in my backyard and seeing if I can attract screech owls or saw-whet owls.
Does anyone have any practical advice about how I would get started on such a thing?
Warning: I have very little experience when it comes to falconry. Don't take anything I say as fact. Do your own research and listen to your sponsor.
I'm doing my own research with Google, but I hope I'm not missing something. I wouldn't want to accidentally get my owl tenant killed.
Another thing I've learned is that experts can provide a lot of advice that would be hard to find elsewhere. I'm going to be in touch with some owl banders to see just how I could attract possible tenants.
Anything I find that is extremely useful and hard to come by, I'll post in this thread. Perhaps it will make others' own research easier.
