From another post made requesting a kestrel, you indicated you lived in California. They are still under the old regs if I am not mistaken. So only a RT Or Kestrel if that's the case.
My permit is held up due to the government shutdown closing down the Fish and Wildlife service, so i either have to wait till it re-opens, or I can also go trapping under my sponsor's permit, since he also happens to have an extra band. Once my permit goes through we can then transfer the bird over to my permit. With the way things are going in the government, who knows how long the shutdown will last.
What you are suggesting on an open forum is illegal. You cannot handle, train or hunt with a BOP until you have that license / permit. Be patient & do it correctly to avoid you and your sponsor getting into unwarranted trouble. It will give an extra few days to prepare anyhow.

I know of an apprentice at the time that the state allowed a redtail to be transferred to him and I believe it was cali. and he is on here. either way , go trap one!! for the experience!!!

It's not the transfer I was speaking of. It is the Handling, Training and Hunting of a Raptor before you have a license portion. Just because I or anyone else have a trapping permit and a State and or Fed Falconry Permit doesn't mean we can allow a Non Licensed pre apprentice to do so. Yes an apprentice can take a bird as a transfer, depending on the state it may not count towards the upgrade however an apprentice may transfer or be transferred a hawk. I also Agree with Rob on the last part of his statement, wait for your license then go trap your own, it's well worth the experience.

To clarify, my sponsor would be the one doing the trapping. I can be with him of course when he's doing that. Anyway, just didn't want to leave that hanging out there. We will be waiting anyhow.
