Hi, I just joined the Texas Hawking Association and I'm a brand new member to this site. I am super excited on learning all about Falconry and need to know how I can get started and eventually get an apprenticeship. I'm about 45 minutes outside of Austin in Horseshoe Bay. Aside from getting books, studying, and being so thrilled to hopefully make this my life, what's next? I'm currently a homemaker, but have extensive experience in the animal care field. Jobs include zookeeper, animal control officer, vet tech and reptile caretaker at California Zoological Supply in Santa Ana, CA. Just wanted to introduce myself and am looking forward to any responses I get!

Hi Jennifer, Welcome to the forums! The best thing to do for now is read everything you can. Then go hawking with someone, try to attend the THA meets. After that you'll find a sponsor, take the test, etc. Getting into falconry is not a quick process. Realistically, expect at least 6-12months before you have your own bird.
