hello, ive seen a couple of people on videos on pootube using a creance line which is on a "line winder" so you can use a handle to wind lhe line in instead of the dumb wooden handles, but i cant for the life of me find any anywhere, can someone point me in right direction pleasey? thankyou
You can get winders for line like that at lowes or home depot. They are with the mason line, or the area where they sell rope/chain ect. You can buy them empty and then take your creance line wind it on there and you are good to go.,
Oh sorry. Yes well then. I would think hardware stores would have them. I was also thinking about chalk line reels (geared ones). If you got a new one (without chalk of course). Opened it up and removed to chalk line string. Then added the creance line. You would have a very clean fast and efficient reel, and storage device.
yes ive looked at some but they look nasty and are very small with 30m line,im not sure id get the 50m 1mm/2mm line on them? have seen kite winders that look interesting although rather large,im just butchering a wind in 100ft tape measure at the moment but its not the best looking one at all, nowhere near as nice and professional as one i saw on a pootube vid.
hmmm,or is it battery powered? i think ill find a modern hand crank one,no batterys to go flat! would/could the colour of line be a problem for the hawk? eg, a bright colour or dark one?
I use bright pink mason line already on a hand-crank reel for my creance...never had a problem with the color bothering the bird, and it makes it easy to see the line if something happens to get tangled.

COLOR OF CREANCE LINE : This would be a question for the person you are getting the Hawk from. Each Hawk has its own personality and may respond to certain stimuli differently .
Aside from unrolling a creance line once to use it and once again to take it home theres no great hassle to having it Manual ... My Creance is a 14" piece of 1" PVC pipe with 2 end caps filled with sand. the Creance line is 4mm mountaineering rope : One end is tied in a monkey fist knot and ran through the center of the PVC ( 1/4' drilled hole in one side ) from the inside . Then the sand and closing cap go in . The line is 100 feet and has a #8 sampo coastlok swivel tied to the other end to secure the jesses. Pretty easy process and the creance is heavy enough to avoid fly-aways with gear in use that could kill your hawk.
My bits worth anyhow,

I was taught that the bird should never know its on a creance. Mine dont spend much time on one. A few flights then it into the woods. Yarak
If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away
thankyou for your input guys,my bird is trained and very tame but will be going back to basics with him just to see what bad habbits hes picked up,hes not been flown much in last 2 yrs,but ive got a couple of months now to bond with him,ill buy a dark coloured line for when i start to re-train him before i take him to ragg some bunnys. ;-)

If your bird is trained and very tame drop its weight and go hunting. It does not need a refresher course. If indeed it has developed behavior issues many of those will go away once the bird starts killing. Yarak

I actually think a little bit of creance work might not be a bad thing. You don't know what a bird will do with a different handler. It might seem fine, be coming in to the glove or lure and realize it's a different person and get spooked.
Make sure you've got him at the appropriate hunting weight, do a few calls on the creance (maybe a day, maybe just a couple before you start hunting) and if all seems well, go hunting. If you're using a different lure than the one he had before, make sure you feed him on it before the first time you take him out so he's familiar with it.
Anyway, good luck!

im getting all the kit with him from my friend, bird, mews, telemetry, perches, leashes falconry jkt, lures, cctv, leather tools and and and,but agreed i think some creance line work with lures hes used to will be an invaluable training sesion or two for him. thanks for ideas and help guys,ur all a good bunch, wish uk falconers were more helpfull instead of stuck up their own bottoms,(most but not all).
