Please excuse my ignorance and n00bishness, I'm not completely familiar with all terms related to falconry. Give me time, I'm learning.
So, I just have a few questions about upkeep.
1) About how much room does a mew and weathering yard need? I live in a suburban area, neighbors on all side with a decent sized backyard surrounded by a 6-foot security fence. We already have a dog kennel in the yard and space for two more.
a) I also have two dogs (obviously) that are out in the yard during a decent chunk of the day and are inside at night.
b) I go out in my yard fairly often, as does my family (just my mom and dad, lol), just to swing, play horse shoes or kick around a ball and play with the dogs. Is this too much activity where a mew would be placed? Would it stress the bird?
Taking all that in mind, would it be appropriate for me to have a mew in my back yard?
Assuming yes, I have a question about where you would take your bird for manning.
What sort of area would this be?
Would a local park with a large field work? Would I need to get permission? Where do you generally take your birds?
How do you make sure that when you just take them out that they don't go hunting anything out of season?
And finally, where do you take your bird to hunt if you don't have your own land? Just the same area you would go hunting with a gun?
Oh, and one more question. I've seen videos of birds in their homes and I've also read that people keep them in their homes when they first get the bird... how does that work exactly? In terms of keeping the bird clean, having an area for the bird, etc.
Sorry for all the questions. xP
I think I need to do much more research before asking a lot, as I'm sure these questions would be answered if I researched more, but these are just technical questions that I have that I can't seem to find answers to just in the research I've done so far. I may have found a place to volunteer and work with raptors, as well as an open educational event hosted by the Michigan Hawking Club I might be able to go to. Wish me luck!
Thanks for any help, it's awesome that this forum has so many falconers willing to share their knowledge and experience.
