I'm pretty much locked into having a large window on the front of my mews. The question now is whether or not to make the window on the north side, or the right side as one faces the mews, the same length or shorten it. There is a 6' cedar fence some 3' away from the north side of the mews. With the longer window the hawk would get a wee bit of a view "up higher". The main view remains in the front though with the large window. I've got some drawings posted here to show the differences in sizes:
As for the left side, or south side, of the mews, it may be better to have the short window version as there is nothing there to look at save 2 stories of bricks and shingles (the house). I thought that having some sort of window on all 3 sides would help with inside temperatures in the summers as we get a week or two above 100 degrees F. each year.
I can make some sort of shutter to block cold "winter" winds from the north, or for that matter for all of the windows, if need be. Also, if it gets too cold I can bring my hawk inside or put an oil space heater (not oil-fired but convection) inside the mews to take the chill off.
I'd like your comments about the sizes of the windows. What do you think?
Very nice. I do appreciate this and the other photos that you've posted. You've done a splendid job with your mews. I only hope that mine turns out 95% as good

Damn, you sound a lot like me - in spite of our earlier miss-understanding I've revised my plans now for the umpteenth time and done it in Photoshop for the same reasons The dimensions may not all add up as I haven't taken the time to check all of them - we're at the tail end of a move with little time to spare.
The time is fast approaching when, hopefully, I'll be able to start building my mews - not much time for more revisions...lol... I received a postcard from our Architectural Committee that I should have answer from them in a week or two. With luck they will allow it without asking for revisions which would waste more time...
Let me know if you ever get down this way again...lunch sounds good, and we have some good eating places here

Well, window size doesn't appear to matter anymore as my initial mews location and materials were turned down by the HA. I've spoken with the manager of the HA, got some input and now have another location for my mews. I had to downsize it because of easements and change a few things, but now it appears that it will make it through the appeal. I'll personally hand it in right after Labor Day. The modified drawings have been posted in the above links.
This may turn out for the best as the front of the mews now faces our patio and the east. The windowless, insulated, back wall will be facing north - couldn't be any better The only bad thing now is that Killjoy who was going to help me trap my HH is moving and probably won't be available; however, I may have a back-up person, hopefully.
Here is a shot of Mine. The window is facing South by south west For best light transmission. it is 30x30 inches with an additional window 30x15 " on the west side of the front corner connected to the front window.
