I joined the forum just to ask if there is anyone who would like to adopt a permanently flightless kestrel that a friend of mine found with half of its right wing bitten off. I live in San Diego, and have no permit. As I understand, I can only keep it under the good Samaritan clause of the law which is temporary. If any one knows of an educational facility or falconer that would like to adopt it, let me know ASAP, because by 10:00am pacific standard time on 5/13/10 it will be euthanized at an animal hospital. I would hate for this to happen, but I have no choice. Thank you-

This isn't the proper avenue to go about saving this kestrel. The "good samaritan" clause you are referring to only allows you to have the bird in possession long enough to get it to a vet or rehabber. You cannot, by law, keep this bird any longer. Any falconer or educator can only acquire this bird through legal means, ie, a rehabber, other falconer, etc. Not a random person off the street. You need to get this bird into legal hands. If it is euthanized, so be it, plenty of birds are.

When you find an injured bird, and you take it in to your possession, it is YOUR responsibility to find a rehabber. There is only a tiny chance, at best, that a rehabber will find you.
In the future, you need to take responsibility. Holding on to the kestrel without proper permits is illegal.
