I've been playing with a new idea for dacron jesses. Not sure what to call it, but it's more of a weave than a braid, so we'll call it that for now. Here's a pic of what I've done so far.
From bottom up, there's a 3 strand, 4 strand, 6 strand, 8 strand, then 8 strand with 16 strand button. Still a work in progress, but I think I'm ready to start on my first jess. I'm going to do a 12 strand button with a 6 strand round weave, then two 3 strands for the slit. We'll see how it turns out.

kite builder. com has dacron in many colors and weights. There is a post somewhere with that info, keep looking....plus there is great info online if you google, how to round braid free hand or with a disk. Dig around, the links are here somewhere!!
After all was said and done, that weaving method turned out to use a ton of material and time to make. Also they were super stiff and heavy. I ended up using a Kumihimo disc to do an 8 strand round braid with a 6 strand star knot for the button. It went really fast and that disc is a dream to use. The braid turns out perfect and even every time and I don't even have to think about it. In fact, it was so easy, I braided a 6' rope for my lure with a swivel in it to keep from getting tangled. I'll post pics one of these days.

I'm thinking about weaving some jesses. Do you mind me asking where you got the dacron line?

Sorry I didn't reply for so long. I haven't had much time to be on the forum lately.
I got the line from Bass Pro Shop. The brand is Magibraid by Offshore Angler and it's described as " Tournament grade dacron trolling line". There's a phone number on the spool that you could probably call and they could tell you who in your area sells the line. 1-800-OFFSHORE
The weight I got was 37 kg. I think 8 strand is a bit thick for a kestrel, so I'm going to try 6 strand and see how that goes. I recently talked to a friend who did 4 strand and it was plenty strong. I'm worried it would fall out of the jess too easily though.
Killjoy, if you read this, what weight and type of braid are you using?

I use 50lb dacron and I think it would make some really nice micro hawk stuff! I'm no good at the jesses button but the leashes with swivels braided in I have down I do the 8 strand round braid on all my stuff and its very durable. I made a system for my harris with the 80lb and I would trust it for any bird under 1400grams. I made a system out of 130lb for my sponsors gos that flies at 1200grams because he likes heavy stuff... I would use it for a golden eagle lol I have been thinking about making a custom eagle leash system with steel cable as a core to give it even more security for those extra paranoid falconers out there.

That is exactly how I feel. The difference in the quality of my weaving from freehand to kumihimo was scary! It looked like a 6 year old did the freehand braids!!! I made my own disk, I didn't want to pay for one...it was super easy...and they have patterns for flat plait braids online as well!

Got any pics?

Sweet. Do you know the links to the flat braids? I'm also looking for instructions for a 6-strand on the kumihimo. Ever seen anything like that?

I can take some pics but since I only have my phone to use as an internet connection it will have to wait till next week. All I use is black since I can't find any colors I like in the 80lb and 130lb stuff.
Sorry if it is a bit random, I was only briefly looking at the bookmarks....but I found a lot of info on google and followed links to some crafting sites and came up with several patterns that were easy enough to follow. hope it helps!

As for the test weight of the line, for a kessie I bet you could get away with 50lb line and a 4 strand....for a RT you can still use the 50lb but do a 6 or 8 strand....maybe a 16 for the mews leash. ask around and look in the equipment thread, because I know there is another thread for this and it may have more info for you, too. and ask your sponsor....once you make it up if they think it is sturdy enough or over kill! Hahaha.....but this is really a much much easier method than freehand, and you don't have to hold it tight. Time consuming though

Has anyone used the big wooden Madurai to make a Fox Loop leash. The weave would have to alternate between eight strand and four strand (eight for the tab, two strand of four for the loop, and back to eight strand for the length). I'm sure there must be a way.
