as with any hobby / job / profession, a facility to house it in is most likely the most nessessary... and probably one of the largest items in the start up cost budget.
So, and planning ahead like i like to do, i was wondering about the foot prints of folks' Mews and Weathering areas, square footage, and how tall you made these facilities. If you have pictures i would love to see them.
As a note, i'm not trying to 'one up' my sponsor (who i've not met yet ) i'm trying to figure out my starting cost, ballpark amount of materials, tools and other required furnitures. I wish to make my facilities the best i can without going 'over the top' (imagine if you will a dog house made from cardboard, one made from plywood, and one with electrical, running water and vinyl siding if you wish to understand my regards to 'over the top)
also, i know this information is on these forums ~already~ but i spent the majority of yesterday thumbing through posts and never quite finding solid information and its completely relevent to this.
Here are a few pictures of my mews. The footprint is 20ft long X 10ft deep X 8ft high. It has two 8X10ft chambers with a 4X10 workspace in the middle.
Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines "Give a man a fish, and you'll feed him for a day; give him a religion................ and he'll starve to death while praying for a fish."
The windows i see there, they seem to be barred... does this allow the elements in or do you shutter them in the colder seasons? i'm from michigan and i was curious about how much exposure the bird can handle, or rather, ~should~ handle.
i went ahead and whipped up this drawing, based on reading i've done around the net... i need to have a tentative floor plan / design so that i can sit down with my father and even see if he wants something like this built out on the property.
Dang! I wish i could just "whip up" a plan like that! Looks nice.
My mews look quite a bit like Weasel's (i even have the same siding and trim) with one notable goof up: I built my without the work space in side. I do most of my work in me garage. when i build my next one, it will definitely have it's own work space. I do not shutter my windows. They face the south, so i don't have a problem with wind, rain and snow blowing in (usually). The problem isn't the cold as much as it is the heat of summer. Since i house a gos and a 3/4 gyr i don't worry about the cold at all. I do have screens over the bars to keep the WNV carriers out.

that brings up an interesting question... how many birds would a mews, like the one i drew, be effective for? or are we talking individual mews / weathering for each raptor?
Microsoft Visio is the program ... its got built in tools for ground / floor plans and what not. its really quite handy. I plan on CADing the Giant Hood so i can produce exacting design pictures and materials lists. prolly post that work here too for whomever wants to get their hands on it.
each raptor needs a separate mews that is at least an 8x8x8 area. you can have one mews but the birds must be separated by a wall. ive seen two mews separated by the double door area. it turned out to be a pretty neat design.
as for price, it really depends on how extravagant you want to build it. i'd say the minimum amount you'll spend is 700 dollars. and we all know it goes up from there...
