A medium-sized, mostly black or grey hawk with jesses and bells appeared in my property this morning (trying to get at our parakeet taking a sunbath on the front porch in his cage - no harm done) I live near Shoshone, CA, and the bird will probably stay in the area for a while, as water and prey are available - we're WAY out in the desert. I've rescued lost homing pigeons before, but I have no idea what to do about a hawk!

Please leave the hawk be, I don't advise messing with it. I would try contacting the California hawking club and let them know where you spotted the bird. Their site is down at the moment, but here is the link incase it comes back up www.calhawkingclub.org/
If you can, with binoculars read the band number that would help
