Greetings all,
I have a 3 year old German Shorthair/English Pointer Cross. She is a great dog, I have spent a good deal of time training her, she knows the following commands/Hand signals:
Sit / Fist up palm forward
Stay / open hand palm foward
Down / Point to the ground
Come / no hand signal
Go find the birds / point in the direction I want her to find them
It works fairly well, she knows that when I tell her to find the birds, it means to use her nose, though I am not sure how well she really tracks. I have used a variety of training techniques. I have Meullers book: Speed train your gun dog. I just cant seem to get a few things to stick, or I just have no Idea how to get her doing this.
Its important though, that I make some progress with her this year, as I am supposed to be flying a longwing this next year, and I need my dog to be working properly. She is a smart dog, and learns quickly, so I think with some help, I can get her behaving properly. These are my issues/questions, any help would be much much appreciated:
Heel: She creeps in heel, I cant get her to stop, I use a leash, but she pulls against it. She insists on walking in front of me, instead of right next to me on my right side.
1. What can I do to get my dog to heel close to my right side, and stay there?
Whoa: The dog sometimes holds a point... but its horribly intermittent, usually she will just break and chase. She chased a jackrabbit nearly 4 miles never less than 5 feet from its tail, she tore off the pads on all 4 feet. She chases doves around here all the time, and I cant get her to try to just point them. I need her to point and hold, but I quite frankly have no Idea how to accomplish it.
1. How do I get her to point and hold, I have tried some of the methods described in the book, but I really dont know where to go with her on this.
2. how do I keep her from chasing when I flush?
Overall:
1. How do I get her to obey my command until I give her another one. If I tell her to stay , it will usually only stick for 30 seconds or so. Any suggestions on how to extend that?
2. When I had a kestrel, I had her laying down as soon as she saw my bird, but with my last birds, she didn't exactly charge them, but she would get right on top of them, and this concerns me. How do i get her to check off of her persuit as soon as she sees my bird? For example: She points quail, we flush, she chases (on command) and my bird takes one, and goes to ground with it, how do I get her to check off as soon as she sees the falcon?
We have a wealth of knowledge on this board, I hope that I'll be able to get some good feedback. Thank you all in advance.
