New to Falconry so if this is a bad idea PLEASE let me know. Is chain LInk fencing an ok material to use for a weathering yard? If not what is the best material to use?
For a weathering yard it would probably work fine. Keep in mind though, if the bird can touch the chain link, its BAD!
Only use chain link as a weathering yard if the bird is tethered and CANNOT make contact with the chain link. It should be for keeping other critters OUT and the bird should be tethered so it cannot touch the chain link.
In Ohio Its BAD BAD BAD. We have mink. Those little devils can get through the smallest holes. Our jobs are to keep our birds safe.also you 're bird will get free in the weathing area.It has happened to most and will sooner or later. Had a Redtail free in my weathering area for no more than a couple of hours and had some pretty good cere damage. I use teflon coated 2" X 3" wire
I used chain link dog kennel panels for my weathering area. I raised them up on 4 rows of landscape timbers for height and to help keep out diggers. I also cut out the wire on one panel and the door and installed vertical bars. All other inside wire surface is covered in super heavy duty mosquito netting. So far so good, but I haven't tried freelofting yet. I had a bunch of those panels on hand so I used them to save time and cash. If I was starting from scratch I'd use the coated wire as well.

I have just built my first mews and I wanted to build my weathering area so the bird could be free lofted so I built an 8'x8'x8' frame of 2x4s and covered the whole thing in snow fencing, they make it in black instead of orange and its a thick heavy plastic so the bird can see it, my sponsor was skeptical at first but now that hes seen it he said hes going to put it on his.
I have used chain link as my weathering area for many years with out a problem. I do not freeloft my birds even in the mews. I currently have a golden eagle that is kept in a 12x 24 chain link enclosure. I do have a slide cable that keeps the bird tethered but still allows him to travel from end to end {20 feet} in the enclosure. It does not let him touch the chain link on the sides or the top of the enclosure. I am currently building a 16x24x 8 feet tall weathering area that has what we call hog wire. The openings are 2"x 4" and the supports are 1"square tubing.
